Ideal

Got this from a former classmate of my dad's today, and thought I'd share. Very eloquent:

Where to begin on the morning after one of the sweetest victories in "our" era at Vanderbilt?
Vanderbilt urged successfully her fans and student to wear white last night, to "white out" memorial Gym.When it began snowing around 6:00 PM, I thought, "Is God getting into this also?"

I know you don't like to hear this but Bruce Pearl is always gracious toward Vanderbilt. He was last night.

It seemed that the entire gym sang the Alma Mater last night, thundering "Conquer and Prevail." I love the thought of that--Vanderbilt has a group of fans with no connection to Furman Hall but who love that little school because she is their neighbor. It is Vanderbilt's most effective community outreach.

Finally, I thought of you all and I thought of those who would become you. Think of those students who will go on to live different lives in different parts of the country. There will be wealthy entrepreneurs, big city lawyers, acamadecians, journalists, peasants. Some will have children who will be nuts over our little commodores like their parents. They will marry spouses who their classmates will swear went to school with them even though they did not. In short they will be US. And last night was a big step along their way ,their frustrating and sometimes glorious way, of becoming us.

So here is to them .Here is to the Vanderbilt fans of Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Here is to our little group. Here is to our gallant team. And here is to the Commodore.

amen. My love for Vanderbilt deepened when I witnessed this beautiful, rare glimpse of good sportsmanship and camaraderie:

After a close, emotional loss to Georgia (football) the students put their arms around each other and sang the Alma Mater. They didn't skip out early, cursing the team or making excuses. They support their Commodores win or lose. Conquer and prevail.
