Apparently journalists, such as Olin Buchanan over at Rivals, still thinks we were trying to "de-emphasize intercollegiate athletics," when we got rid of the Athletics Department a few years ago.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear this brought up once or twice over the weekend coverage. I guess journalists have their standard talking points written on flash cards they continue to repeat over and over again, such as "fat cat," "golden parachute," and others I'm going to go insane if I hear again.
I'm by no means a Chancellor Ghee fan. I don't like a lot of the things he did during his brief stay at Vanderbilt. I will back him up as a supporter of the Athletics though. I think this can be evidenced in the success our teams have experienced in the recent past. Our baseball team is consistently one of the better teams in the SEC and bringing in top recruiting classes, our basketball program continues to get better and better each year, and our football team has seen continued competitiveness since Cutler's senior year.
I know we got rid of the ever successful futbol program at Vandy...but hey, we traded it for a National Championship in Women's Bowling.
